Christmas Eve Services: Two Options, One Proclamation
On Christmas Eve, Redeemer will hold two Divine Services, each centered on the same Gospel message, sermon, and hymns, while offering different levels of ceremony to best serve the needs of our community.
The 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Service is intentionally simpler in ceremony. This service will include Holy Communion, familiar Christmas hymns, and the same sermon preached later in the evening. However, it will not include choral music, hand-held candles, or additional musical offerings. Our hope is that this earlier service will be especially welcoming for those who prefer not to drive after dark, those with young children, those who keep other evening traditions, or anyone who simply desires an earlier conclusion to the day. This service is expected to conclude within about one hour.
The 7:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Service will be Redeemer’s traditional candlelight service, lasting approximately ninety minutes. This service includes full ceremony, choral music, and the beloved candle-lighting during the singing of “Silent Night.” For many families, this service is a treasured annual tradition and a beautiful way to welcome Christmas with reverence, music, and light in the darkness.
Christmas Day and the Twelve Days of Christmas
Christmas at Redeemer does not end on December 25—it begins. On Christmas Day, Redeemer will hold a Divine Service at 10:30 a.m. This service is distinct from Christmas Eve and includes full ceremony and music, giving the congregation the opportunity to celebrate the Nativity in the brightness of Christmas morning. Following the ancient practice of the Church, Redeemer will also celebrate daily communion throughout the Twelve Days of Christmas. Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, December 26, and Saturday, December 27. On Sunday, December 28, services will be held at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m., as usual.
Daily services continue on Monday, December 29; Tuesday, December 30; and Wednesday, December 31, all at 8:30 a.m. On Thursday, January 1, the Divine Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Services resume at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, January 2, and Saturday, January 3, with Sunday, January 4, following the normal schedule. On Monday, January 5, the service will again be at 8:30 a.m., and on Epiphany, January 6, Redeemer will celebrate with services at 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. This full cycle of worship reflects the Church’s confession that Christmas is not a single day, but a season overflowing with grace.
Christmas Day Dinner and Fellowship
In addition to worship, Redeemer Lutheran Church invites everyone to share in Christmas Day dinner and fellowship. The meal will begin around 3:00 p.m. with appetizers, followed by dinner at 4:00 p.m. There will be at least a couple of turkeys provided, while the remainder of the menu will depend on what participants bring to share. Those attending are asked to bring any beverages beyond coffee or water, as well as table service for their family. This gathering is a beautiful opportunity to extend hospitality, especially to those who may otherwise spend the day alone, and to rejoice together in the gift of Christ and Christian community.
