No matter how old we are, no matter how long we’ve been studying the Scriptures, and no matter how deep our understanding of Christian doctrine, we can always learn more. The Holy Bible, after all, is a work of profound complexity. It is the Word of God. He is its true author, and His is the mind behind its revelations.
That said, one of the Bible’s most remarkable features is its accessibility. The basic teachings of scripture can, by God’s design, be apprehended by virtually anyone willing to seek them out. The difficulty often arises when we try to apply the Bible’s wisdom to our daily lives.
This is where continuing Adult Bible Study can be of help. At Redeemer Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, our Adult Bible Study class meets year round, every Sunday at 9:15 a.m. We meet to explore the Bible’s teachings, examine its deeper precepts, engage in thoughtful discussion, and support each other in our efforts to live according to God’s Word.
There are two Adult Bible Classes currently in session on Sunday mornings. All of our Sunday morning classes, including the children’s Sunday School, begin in the undercroft at 9:15 for Bible and catechism memory work, hymns, and prayer before breaking up into separate classes.
Pastor Petersen’s Bible class stays in the undercroft for a discussion of a short section from the Lutheran Confessions, followed by an intensive study moving through one book of the Bible at a time. We are in Ephesians.
Pastor Frese’s Bible class proceeds to the Luther Room in the administration building. This study’s focus is the Parables of Jesus. This discussion-format environment allows us to the explore the basic Biblical doctrine in these Parables, along with basic Lutheran doctrine supported in them.
In our classes, questions and comments from participants are welcomed. Involvement by participants is fluid between Pastor Frese’s and Pastor Petersen’s classes. There may be Sundays when the classes are combined, so be sure to come down to the undercroft first for the opening prayers.
Every session includes donuts and coffee (from Old Crown Coffee Roasters) along with a heaping helping of Christian hospitality.
